The expertise of THU professors is the key to the future. With their teaching, research and knowledge-transfer activities they drive forward changes to the world of work – in business and society. In particular, they give specialists and future managers a first-class education and supply the jobs market with urgently needed technical employees.
But how can we find the right professors for our university of applied sciences? As part of the federal-state program FH-Personal, Project THUProf4.0 supports Ulm University of Applied Sciences (THU) in the acquisition, retention, and qualification of suitable professors for THU.
We are looking for professors who can react to our constantly changing environment. “Type 4.0” professors help students meet these sometimes fundamental changes with the appropriate skills, thus preparing industry and society for, for example, a “4.0” world of work in the future.
The project aims to boost the visibility of THU as an employer – and careers as a THU professor – for potential candidates.

Background to the THUProf4.0 project
The expertise of “Type 4.0” professors is urgently needed to help shape the future of science, business, and society through teaching, research, and knowledge transfer. As drivers of technical innovation and knowledge transfer, they are predestined to solve the urgent problems of our time using technological approaches. The challenge for technical universities: because specialists – in particular engineers – are highly sought after in the jobs market, THU must compete with industry for the brightest brains. THU is doing everything it can to promote diversity, including trying to increase the number of applications we receive from women, as well as from international candidates.
THUProf4.0 is active in two fields.
Action Field 1 Objectives
- As the role of a professor changes in the 21st century, THUProf4.0 is helping THU develop requirements and expertise profiles for the professorship appointment procedure. Active sourcing is one way we carry out our search for suitable candidates.
- At THU we are also trialing alternative professorship models. These receive the freedom to implement or build upon flagship projects. THU has set up two professorships, one focusing on hydraulics and the other on digitalization and intelligent production. The Hydraulics Professorship is based in the THU Hydraulics Center of Excellence (in German). The network, currently involving 20 companies, will be extended to train specialists for the industry. The Digitalization and Intelligent Production Professorship brings together subjects such as digitalization, artificial intelligence, and industrial production.
Action Field 2 Objectives
- The project team supports THU in our work with local stakeholders from companies, universities, associations, and institutions from the region in a joint effort to secure the future of our society via knowledge transfer. We plan to extend the cooperation and cooperation platforms within the region.
- The THUProf4.0 helps THU and our Equality Unit to improve THU’s appeal to women and international candidates – promoting diversity by encouraging them to apply for professorships.
Cross-functional teams and contact
THUProf4.0 unites a variety of stakeholders, working together to win the best brains for our organizations. THUProf4.0 works in cross-functional teams with cross-sector, interdisciplinary groups from administration and practice. These include the Staff Development Working Group (Arbeitskreis Personalentwicklung, AK-PE in German), Human Resources, the Equality Unit, the University of Applied Sciences Management, the Deaneries, and Corporate Communications. For example, these come up with actions for a professorship or a department, which can then be transferred to other parts of the University of Applied Sciences. The team is organized using tools from agile project management.
