Sustainable Energy Competence

Master of Science (M.Sc.)

Crude oil and natural gas resources are limited. To counteract climate change, we need a drastic reduction in CO2 emissions and increased use of renewable energies. Against the backdrop of the radical restructuring needed in the energy industry – to use less energy more intelligently – we offer you a Master of Science qualification in Sustainable Energy Competence (SENCE).

In cooperation with the Rottenburg and Stuttgart universities of applied sciences, we will give you the training to become an expert in the planning and implementation of contemporary energy concepts.

The course covers the theory and practical application of regenerative energies: generating heat and electricity using solar, water and wind power, as well as wood as a sustainable energy source.

The creation and use of biomass, solar power, combined heat and power and fuel cells are on the teaching plan, as well as building and facade engineering. Each of the three universities of applied sciences has their own specialist expertise to impart, enabling holistic planning and implementation of contemporary energy concepts.

Thanks to the research and project-oriented structure of the course, you will receive a practically-oriented education which ideally prepares you for the needs of the job market.

Prerequisites

To apply for the SENCE degree programme, you need an initial occupational qualification, a good Bachelor's degree or a diploma in a scientific or technically-oriented subject.
Furthermore, participation in a selection interview is a required component of the admission procedure.
This generally takes place in the period between July 2 and July 15, in a "motivation" interview at one of the cooperating universities of applied sciences.
The applicants will receive an invitation by post and e-mail from the relevant university of applied sciences, sufficiently in advance of the interview date.

Course schedule

The four-semester Master's degree programme SENCE is based on three equally important teaching areas: natural sciences, technical sciences and economics & social sciences.
These are reflected in the different phases and modules of the course. Self-guided, project-oriented work and research is a particular focus of this degree programme.
The students practice this at the participating universities of applied science or in the industry.
In the first semester, the lectures and seminars all take place at the Hochschule Rottenburg.
The content of this semester can be subdivided into four modules: Sustainable Management, Team and Project Management, Sustainable Energy Technology: System Technology and Sustainable Energy Technology: Building Technology. In the second semester, two coursework projects will be carried out at one of the three universities of applied sciences or with external project partners. In the third semester, research and company-related core competencies will be taught in the form of multiple seminars. The Master's thesis will be written in the fourth and last semester. This can be undertaken either at the participating universities of applied sciences, or in cooperation with external partners.
After completing this degree programme, you will be awarded the academic degree title "Master of Science".

Career prospects

As a graduate of this degree programme you will have attractive career options – particularly with the manufacturers of energy-related products and systems, with energy-intensive manufacturing operations, with energy supply companies as well as in public utility companies and engineering offices.
It is expected that several hundred thousand jobs will be created thanks to the radical restructuring of the energy economy to use a minimum amount of energy in a sustainable way.

Graduates of the degree programme SENCE are therefore highly sought-after.
