Photovoltaics – the direct conversion of solar radiation into electrical energy – is an essential component of our future energy supply.
Research topics at THU include the characterization of solar cells and solar modules, aging investigations on cells, modules and systems, development of technical management, and network integration of solar inverters and battery systems. Comprehensive models are available for computer-supported simulation and analysis of solar cell behavior through to network integration. A wide range of laboratory equipment – including a Class AAA flasher, electroluminescence cameras, infrared cameras and climatic chambers – is available for research work. Technical management systems and mobile measuring equipment for field measurements are available for analyzing solar power system failures. The integration of solar power into the distribution network is being researched in the Smart Grids laboratory at THU.
