Cultural offerings and student projects at Ulm University of Applied Sciences
Sport on campus and in the region
Ulm and its surroundings offer a wealth of sport and leisure activities. Sport enthusiasts will find opportunities to let off steam, relax and, at the same time, discover one of Germany's most beautiful regions.
In cooperation with Ulm University, all THU students are entitled to participate in the University's Sport Program, which provides a whole range of team and individual sports. Find out more here.
There are also opportunities for sport on the THU campus itself. The THU Running Team takes part in events such as the Einstein Marathon and the Spartacour Mud Run. University members can find information on this via the Moodle course "THU Running Team".
The volleyball field on the Prittwitzstrasse campus allows you to have a quick match whenever you feel like it. If you want to keep fit on your way to lectures, you can come by bike – there are plenty of bike racks for parking at both locations.
Beyond the city, the region offers plenty of options for hiking, cycling and winter sports in fantastic countryside – for example close by on the Swabian Alb, in the Allgäu or around Lake Constance. There are plenty of attractive destinations which can be reached quickly by car or by public transport. Water sports enthusiasts will enjoy rowing on the Danube or swimming in the many bathing lakes the area has to offer.
Find plenty more tips for leisure activities here.
Ulm Students' Council (VS Ulm)
The Ulm Students' Council is the official representative body for all students. You automatically become a member of the VS Ulm when you enroll for your studies at THU – and we warmly invite you to get actively involved. You can do this by exercising your right to vote on internal THU issues, by standing for office or simply by coming to a Student Council meeting or helping with events.
In addition to its political responsibilities, the VS also undertakes additional tasks – for example, organizing and supporting parties, sporting events and a whole range of student projects. The student representatives also provide ongoing support to students with individual discussions, advice and help. We're all volunteers at the VS, so we'll always have a warm welcome ready for new members or anyone interested in what we do – why not drop in and say hi?
Find out more information here, or check Instagram for impressions and the latest news.
Orchestra
The Ulm University of Applied Sciences Symphony Orchestra: are you musically talented – do you play a wind, string or keyboard instrument? Then you've come to the right place. New members are always welcome. We are particularly looking for viola, double bass, horn and trumpet players. The orchestra offers a wide musical spectrum – from classical, romantic, salon and film music, through to modern pieces.
The Ulm University of Applied Sciences Symphony Orchestra rehearses regularly on Thursdays from 19:50-22:00p.m. in the aula (with a special hygiene concept). Newcomers are welcome. If you're interested in joining us, please contact the conductor via e-mail at (orchester@thu.de), or the relevant contact person, to organize a date for a taster session. Rehearsals for the winter semester 24/25 start on Thursday, 10 October 2024.
Each semester generally finishes with a public semester concert in Ulm. You can see the pieces we've already played by looking at our program history.

University of Applied Sciences Choir
Are you interested in music and enjoy singing with other people? Then join the Ulm University of Applied Sciences Choir!
We mostly sing modern pieces by the Wise Guys, Michael Jackson, Queen, Harry Belafonte, Juli and Maybebob, and the latest gospels too. You can join us at any time! You don't need any special knowledge and you don't need to audition! We perform at internal THU celebrations, as well as at social occasions in the city of Ulm.
So, for example, in July the University of Applied Sciences Choir delighted the audience as part of the multicultural music project “Live and Let Live”. We are currently starting a very exciting intercultural choir project for safeguarding and improving democracy.
If you're interested, please get in touch with us at mcromes@gmx.de
By the way: our choir outings are also very popular :-)
As well as inspiring music, the choir also offers speaking voice training, breathing techniques and posture training.
During lecture periods we rehearse every Tuesday, from 5:30 pm in the Aula.

Einstein Motorsport
Einstein Motorsport ... The start of a new era!
We are over 60 motivated students from Ulm University of Applied Sciences, Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences and Ulm University. For 14 years now, in parallel to our studies, we have been planning, designing and manufacturing racing cars for Formula Student – completely by ourselves.
What is Formula Student?
Formula Student is an international design competition for students. For example, Formula Student Germany has been held annually at the Hockenheim Ring since 2006. This competition is not just to find the fastest racing car, but to evaluate the design, the business plan and the marketing too.
Einstein Motorsport are an ambitious team who regularly achieve excellent results at the international events – despite having comparatively few resources compared to competing elite universities.
Electric Einstein!
2021 was reached a special milestone in the history of the club: after two years' development, our first purely electric racing car with self-developed autonomous systems will be on the starting line at the Hockenheim Ring. We rely on your support to achieve this goal.
If we've sparked your interest and you'd like to help us in achieve our ambitious goal, click the following link to see our current vacant positions:

Fairetrade AG
If you want to be an advocate for fair trade and do your bit to make the world a better place, then Fairtrade AG is for you!
THU became a certified Fairtrade University in 2019. A condition of this certification is to inform people about fair trade, for example, with events and activities covering issues such as fair IT, land grabs, welfare economics or agroforestry. In addition, the Students' Union offers fair trade products wherever possible, for example, in coffee machines and vending machines.
You can find out more on the Fairtrade THU page https://www.fairtrade-universities.de/university/technischehochschuleulm and in the Moodle course "Fairtrade AG" (Key: Fairtrade). Anyone who wants to get involved in the AG is very welcome. You can decide for yourself which projects you want to work on.
If you have any questions about Fairtrade AG please contact the Students' Council (VS) VS@thu.de.
Sustainability Committee
The THU Sustainability Committee promotes sustainability at Ulm University of Applied Sciences, starting with appropriate teaching content, right through to working toward having a more sustainable campus. With a variety of projects and initiatives, it supports environmental awareness and resource-conserving practices. In regular get-togethers, we kick-off and drive forward sustainability projects relating to the THU. These projects include, for example, reusing old equipment, the proper recycling of waste materials (particularly metals), saving energy and protecting nature on campus.
As a student, becoming part of the Sustainability Committee gives you the opportunity to work directly for a better future, in your own surroundings. Not only will you gain specialist knowledge in this field, but you can also acquire practical experience and strengthen your self-efficacy in a team of like-minded people.
What's more, interesting, sustainability-related projects and theses are frequently announced and supported – allowing you to combine your studies and your commitment to the environment.
Being part of the Sustainability Committee also offers you career advantages. Employers are increasingly placing more value on a sustainable and environmentally-conscious corporate culture. Involvement in the Committee demonstrates you are aware of current developments and are capable of implementing changes.
You can find out more about sustainability at THU here.
If you're interested in getting involved, please get in touch via e-mail: Gerald.Stengele@thu.de.
Repair Café
In the Repair Café, students can borrow, maintain and repair laptops. There is a team of experts on hand to provide support and help people to help themselves. The team also provides tips on what to look out for when buying new equipment and which models are suitable for repairing and upgrading yourself. This extends the lifetime of your device and protects the environment.
The Repair Café also offers regular Tech Talks. If you’d like to chat with people about technology, tinkering and nuts and bolts – or if you have an idea to present – then this is the place for you. Drop by for some Fair Trade coffee and chocolate, meet new people and enjoy some interesting discussions.
The Café is always on the lookout for new people to get involved – people who’d like to use their technical knowledge for something practical. But you’re also very welcome if you’re not a hardware expert! You can help us with organizational tasks and marketing, for example. Contact the team at repaircafe@thu.de.
Interested? Further information is available at the regular meetings, which take place on the second Wednesday of each month at 5:30 p.m. in room F108 (PWS campus). The current dates are listed here.
Culture in the region
Ulm and the surrounding region provide visitors with a wide range of cultural offerings. Numerous theaters, concert halls and an opera house offer drama, ballet, classical music, opera and musicals – often at reduced rates for students. Other happenings include live music, open-air events and food festivals.
Around 15 museums and art exhibitions offer insight into the history of the city and the region, displaying artworks dating from the ice age to the current day. Students usually receive a discount on their entrance tickets. THU students even get into some museums for free. In addition, most museums offer free entry on particular days.
Students in their first semester can go on city tours free of charge. These start from the Tourist Information Office on the Münsterplatz. You can find out more here.
