Would you like to supplement your degree course with phases of practical experience in a company, without increasing the duration of your course? In this case we recommend the study program with in-depth practical experience. Here the teaching content at the University of Applied Sciences is supplemented and combined with intensive practical experience in a company. Phases spent at the University of Applied Sciences alternate with time spent in the company during lecture-free periods, so that the Bachelor's qualification contains almost 40% practical experience. Generally, the practical semester and the thesis are also undertaken in the partner company.
For which degree courses is this option possible?
The study program with in-depth practical experience is possible in all Bachelor's degree programs at the University of Applied Sciences, with the exception of Computational Science - International Program and Physiotherapy.
Advantages of the model
A study program with in-depth practical experience offers you numerous advantages compared with a conventional course. Thanks to the practical phases spent in a company while you are still at university, you will not only receive attractive financial support for the entire duration of your studies, but you will have the opportunity to directly apply the knowledge you have gained in the lectures. This means you will attain a Bachelor's qualification with a large practical component. Here the company guarantees you focused content for all your practical training phases. Furthermore, early integration in a company will make your career start considerably easier once you have finished your course, since the chances of being taken on directly are generally very good.
Course schedule and duration
On the study program with in-depth practical experience, you will undertake a regular degree course at the University of Applied Sciences. In contrast to the Ulm Model study program, an apprenticeship is not part of the study program with in-depth practical experience. Because you are doing your practical experience in a partner company during the lecture-free periods (and during the practical semester and your thesis), the duration of your course is not extended by the practical component. The Bachelor's degree program can be completed in seven semesters.
It is also possible to join the study program with in-depth practical experience after your course has started (for example, after the Bachelor intermediate examination). You can also read about the exact structure of the course in our Study program with in-depth practical experience fact sheet.
Current partner companies
The current offers from partner companies are – as far as is permitted by those companies – compiled and published by the University of Applied Sciences. Here is the current company list for the study program with in-depth practical experience.
If the company you wish to do your work placements with is not on our list, you can of course take the initiative and ask the relevant company if they would be able to take part. Using your own initiative to get a study place with a company which is not yet involved in the program is expressly welcomed and supported. Many companies only become aware of the dual study program in this way, discovering it to be a valuable way of recruiting their next generation of employees.
Prerequisites
Just as for the classic Bachelor's degree programs, admission to a degree program is only possible if you have an entrance qualification for a university of applied sciences, or a qualification which is at least equivalent to this. For limited-admission degree courses, you will need above-average grades on your higher education entrance qualification certificate. For some degree programs you must provide evidence of a pre-study internship. However, this can also be done as part of the company-based training.(see Departments)
In addition, you must sign a contract with a partner company of Ulm University of Applied Sciences, covering the practical phases. The contract between you and the company will cover points such as your monthly salary for the entire duration of your course, your holiday entitlement or, for example, an obligation to stay with the company for a certain period after your studies have finished. The company is obliged to provide you with demanding and intensely practical training. Admission to a degree program at Ulm University of Applied Sciences is a necessary prerequisite for the contract to come into effect. You should give a copy of the contract to Ms Ihlein.
Applications
Applications for study places are made online.
Ideally, you should already have a contract with a company when you register for your course. However, it is also possible to choose your degree subject first and set up a contract later on while you are studying.
Information for companies
If you wish to participate in the study program with in-depth practical experience, you will need to sign a framework contract with the University of Applied Sciences and a training contract with the student. The contract specifies the rights and obligations of the contract partners: the partner company and the future student to each other and also to Ulm University of Applied Sciences.
