Engineering products and processes are becoming increasingly complex. Making these manageable and realisable is the task of systems engineering. Here, systems-thinking is becoming increasingly important.Customer requirements must be documented early on, development processes defined and design procedures structured in every detail, right up to the handover of the finished product – without losing sight of the overall concept.
The degree programme Systems Engineering and Management will give you the specialist knowledge you need to handle these tasks successfully in industry. The course is offered in four variants with different specialisation subjects for this reason. The three-semester Master's degree programme is the result of cooperation between multiple departments at Ulm University of Applied Sciences, with the goal of providing an attractive further qualification for Bachelor graduates of engineering degrees who are aiming for a future role in management.
In the specialisation “Electrical Engineering” (SYE), you will be taught advanced engineering expertise in hardware and software, as well as commercial knowledge, such as in finance and human resources.
Apply nowPrerequisites
To apply for the Master’s degree programme “Systems Engineering and Management”, you need an above-average qualification in a technically-oriented degree from a German university or a comparable foreign university – with a standard study period of at least three years and course content corresponding to at least 180 ECTS credit points.Furthermore, you should have sound subject knowledge and skills: equivalent to that obtainable at the Ulm University of Applied Sciences in the Bachelor's degree programme Electrical Engineering and Information Technology.Other prerequisites are a good knowledge of German and English, as well as successful participation in a selection interview.
If you are not able to provide complete evidence of the knowledge and skills stated above before starting your studies on the Master's degree programme, but (due to the quality of your first degree and the result of the selection interview) it is to be expected that you will be able to complete the degree programme successfully, you may be admitted: on the condition that you acquire the missing knowledge within one semester.
Course schedule
The course has a modular structure. The standard study period of the full-time course is three semesters. The course plan is structured into four subject groups, the contents of which are aligned with the latest findings from the electrical engineering and information technology sectors. The course plan comprises advanced engineering knowledge in important future-oriented topics, broadened by the economics subjects necessary for managerial tasks.
The subject group “Mathematical/Scientific Fundamentals” covers subjects which are not part of the Bachelor’s degree programme, but which are required for postgraduate scientific studies. In the subject group “Systems Engineering”, you will study engineering science in greater depth over five modules: building on relevant previous knowledge from the Bachelor’s degree programme, but from the perspective of more complex systems and introducing the latest developments in scientific knowledge. The subject group “Management” will teach you the skills you need (in addition to scientific and engineering skills) for successful project management in development fields. Here 2 compulsory modules and another 2 elective modules must be completed. The subject group “Scientific Working” concludes the course with a project and the Master’s Thesis. After successful completion of the degree programme, you will be awarded the academic degree title “Master of Engineering”.

Career prospects
Completion of the Master’s degree programme Systems Engineering and Management – Electrical Engineering will qualify you for challenging managerial roles in the research and development departments of innovative companies, as a project, group or department leader. In the role of a development manager, you will undertake interdisciplinary development projects and report directly to the management board or divisional management. The tasks of a development manager encompass conceiving systems, calculating quotes, negotiating with customers, scheduling and staff planning, as well as overall project management including responsibility for staff. As well as qualifying you directly for a career, completion of the Master’s degree programme also entitles you to enter the civil service on the “höheren Dienst” career path and enables you to do a doctoral degree.
The most important sectors for graduates of this specialisation are electrical engineering and IT.Even today, these fields are characterised by a level of innovation which is far above average. Here, systems development is playing an increasingly important role.Potential careers are primarily in communications engineering, information technology and in automation engineering.Nowadays even the automotive industry, with its numerous supplier companies, is driven by electrical engineering, electronics and software.Currently it is one of the largest employers of Electrical Engineering graduates. It is safe to assume that the sustained high rate of innovation – particularly in development and project work – will ensure favourable employment opportunities in the long term as well.
Certified quality
By deciding to undertake a quality-assured degree programme at Ulm University of Applied Sciences you are well prepared for the future. All our Bachelor's and Master's degree courses are accredited. As part of the accreditation, the feasibility of the degree programme, the contents of the course of study and the suitability of the course's graduates for the requirements of their future careers are assessed. This means that you will receive a degree qualification which is recognised and quality-certified, which will help you with the recognition of your degree programme – both nationally and internationally. The accreditation of the degree programmes at the Ulm University of Applied Sciences offers students and employers a reliable guide regarding the quality of the degree programmes.
