Today, information technology pervades healthcare and clinical research to a significant extent.Information management is increasingly becoming an important prerequisite for planning and controlling supply processes.This explains a growing need for qualified specialists who, alongside a thorough knowledge of medicine, business studies and health administration, also have an in-depth understanding of IT and data analysis.
The Bachelor’s degree programme Health Information Management (IG), which – in this form – is currently unique in Germany, aims to fill this gap.Together with Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences you will be taught the necessary skills in seven semesters, with an interdisciplinary approach.Alongside the fundamentals of medicine, business studies and computer science, you will acquire special knowledge in the fields of health economics, controlling, data mining as well as data and process modelling.
If you have a feel for commercial issues and an interest in IT, as well as being curious to find out what goes on behind the scenes in the healthcare sector, then Health Information Management could well be an appropriate and exciting degree programme for you.

Prerequisites
The formal prerequisite for the degree programme is an entrance qualification for a university of applied sciences, a subject-specific higher-education entrance qualification, a general qualification for university entrance or a comparable qualification.Applicants who have already completed other training in a healthcare career and those who already have relevant work experience are most welcome.
Furthermore, potential careers will require an ability to think analytically. You will need to be able to think and act from an interdisciplinary perspective and to have a talent for recognising interactions and broader contexts.Communication skills and the ability to work in a team are also important.
Course schedule
The degree programme – which can be completed in seven semesters – will give you an interdisciplinary education in the fundamentals of medicine, business studies, health administration, mathematics and computer science.Thanks to a large number of elective modules, from the fourth semester onwards you can choose your own specialisation topics. If you wish, you can then study these in greater depth later on in a Master’s degree programme.As the degree programme IG is offered in cooperation with Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences, the commercial and health economics subjects will be covered there, while Ulm University of Applied Sciences will teach you the medicine and computer science-related subjects.This means you benefit from the strengths of both universities of applied sciences.After successful completion of this degree programme you will be awarded the academic degree title "Bachelor of Science".

As a graduate of the degree programme, your health information management career will be wherever a bridging function is required at the interfaces of medicine, the health economy and IT.Typical tasks include medicine controlling, analyses for controlling performance in healthcare facilities, optimisation of supply processes, quality management, software-requirement analyses, adaptation and introduction of electronic information systems, IT project management, data mining and data warehousing, evaluation of health services and innovative healthcare technologies, as well as consultancy work.Potential employers are hospitals and health centres; health insurance, accident insurance and pension companies; health authorities and associations; consulting companies specialising in health care; health research institutes and medical software houses.
With almost 5 million employees and an annual turnover greater than that of the automotive sector, healthcare is an industry with great opportunities for growth and employment.It is an industry of the future, also in part due to the current demographic development.In particular, the restructuring of the healthcare system, the introduction of new remuneration systems, the optimisation of supply processes and the realisation of innovative healthcare technologies create interesting careers at the interface between medicine, business studies, health administration and IT.
