The thesis is an academic assessment which must be done in the 7th semester. The thesis will be supervised and evaluated (graded) by a professor at the Ulm University of Applied Sciences.
General
The topic of the thesis should incorporate the three pillars of multimedia information design and processing: content, technology and design.
The three areas may have different weightings.
Five topics are given as an example for orientation:
- Presentation of a new product on an information column
- Interactive lesson unit on JPEG compression
- Artistic/design application of "compositing" in the film industry
- Computer game
- Conceiving and realising an Internet portal
The finished thesis must be submitted in digital form on a CD-ROM or DVD. To document the thesis, a written composition (around 30 to 50 pages plus appendix) is to be prepared which, like the CD-ROM or DVD, will remain with the supervising professor.
The cover sheet of the written submission must contain the following information:
- Hochschule Ulm, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, Degree programme: Digital Media
- Thesis to obtain the academic degree title "Bachelor of Arts"
- Title of the thesis
- Author
- Address
- Registration number
- Faculty supervisor and first reviewer
- Second reviewer
- Winter semester / Summer semester 20xx
- Submitted on (date)
Registration
In agreement with their supervising professor, in the 6th semester, students must register the topic of their thesis with the department office, using the form "Anmeldung von Abschlussarbeiten (Bachelor-/Masterarbeiten)" – Registration of theses (Bachelor's or Master's theses).
To ensure registration goes smoothly, the following deadlines should be adhered to: January 30 for a thesis in the summer semester and July 15 for a thesis in the winter semester.
Submission and presentation
Adhering to the deadlines specified on the registration form, the written composition and the technical realisation (CD-ROM and/or DVD) are to be submitted to the supervisor, the department office, the Students' Service Centre (SSC) or, as an alternative to the department office, to Jochen Herrmann in Böfingen – along with the form "Abgabe von Abschlussarbeiten (Bachelor-/Masterarbeiten)" – Submission of theses (Bachelor's or Master's theses).
The date of the presentation can be found in the examination schedule.
Extensions
If there are special reasons – for which the student is not responsible – the examination committee can be requested to extend the deadline by one month.
The supervising lecturer must provide their opinion for this.
Declaration
The thesis must include the following declaration: "I hereby declare that I have prepared this thesis independently and only using the specified sources and tools.
Furthermore, I declare that the thesis has not been published elsewhere, or presented as an academic assessment in another subject."
The supervising lecturer / The supervising lecturers are: "TBD"
Acceptance
Special rules for external theses
For theses which have been carried out in a company or another establishment outside the Hochschule Ulm, the supervising entity must present a written task description (approx. one A4 page) specifying the following points:
- Statement of the problem (the type and scope of the problem must comply with the technical/design requirements of a thesis)
- Desired result
- Existing equipment and tools
- Name of the responsible supervisor in the company.
- The supervisor must have at least the same or a comparable qualification to the qualification that the Bachelor's student is attempting to achieve
- Confirmation by the company that it has understood these requirements and will fulfil the obligations resulting from them.
- The supervising professor at the Hochschule Ulm decides whether the statement of the problem is sufficient to fulfil the requirements for a thesis.
- A visit to the company may be necessary for this.
Reporting
The author is to report on the status of the thesis to the supervising professor in the Ulm University of Applied Sciences at least every 4 weeks.
Presentation
When the thesis is finished, the presentation and acceptance of the thesis takes place in the presence of the supervising professor.
Evaluation
The evaluation (grading) is the responsibility of the two reviewers.
This is based on their personal assessment resulting from the interim reports, the presentation and the written composition, as well as the evaluation by the supervisor in a company.
Here the company has the obligation to submit an evaluation directly to the first reviewer, by the deadline for the written composition. It must explore at least the following points:
- Research and penetration of the field of study
- Concept
- Commitment and independent working
- Use of equipment and tools
- Realisation
- Documentation
