Mechanical Engineering is one of the oldest engineering disciplines.Over the last two centuries, this field has developed from purely practical mechanics into a central engineering science which is closely linked to other disciplines.Whether systems for food processing, the chemicals industry or environmental protection; jet engines for aeroplanes, or production lines for automotive and white goods manufacturers; whether gigantic ships or tiny machines for medical engineering: mechanical engineers design and develop the most diverse products. They also have to take ecological and economic aspects into account.
The seven semester degree programme Mechanical Engineering (MB) will open up a wide range of opportunities for you, based on a universal engineering education. At the heart of the degree programme are the methods and techniques used to design and develop machines, using CAD and modern calculation processes. To tailor your course to your personal preferences, you can choose from the specialisations “Design and Development” and “Automation and Energy Technology” in the main study period.
You can also take this degree programme with the
Ulm Model or with
in-depth practical experience.

Prerequisites
You can apply for the degree programme MB if you have an entrance qualification for a university of applied sciences, a subject-specific higher-education entrance qualification, a general qualification for university entrance or a comparable qualification. In addition, evidence must be submitted that a
pre-study internship of 12 weeks' duration has been completed. You must have completed at least four weeks of thepre-study internship by the start of lectures in the first semester. You can complete the remaining eight weeks before the start of the main study period (start of lectures in the third semester).Applicants who have completed an apprenticeship or practical training at school in the field of metalworking may be completely or partially exempted from having to do the pre-study internship. You can find further details in the flyer
Recognition of school and vocational training.
Furthermore, for this degree programme you will need an understanding of mathematical and scientific interrelationships and an enthusiasm for technology.
Course schedule
The seven-semester course is divided into a basic study period and a main study period. In the basic study period, which includes all modules up to the end of the second taught semester, subjects such as mathematics, physics, materials science, mechanics of materials, CAD, design engineering, manufacturing processes are taught. Finally, in the main study period, you can choose between the specialisations “Design and Development” and “Automation and Energy Technology”.After successful completion of this degree programme you will be awarded the academic degree title “Bachelor of Engineering”.

Career prospects
As a mechanical engineer, you will be designing and developing all kinds of products and will be responsible for efficient production at optimum cost.Potential careers range from design engineering, industrial design, manufacturing and production, sales and service, research and development, human resources, quality assurance, right through to corporate planning and development.
Measured by the number of people it employees, mechanical engineering is the largest industrial sector in Germany, providing 15 per cent of all jobs. Thanks to the lack of qualified specialists, as a mechanical engineer you have excellent prospects when starting your career.According to an analysis of skills shortages in December 2014, in Germany, it is primarily the mechanical engineering sector which is experiencing a lack of skilled labour.Furthermore, mechanical engineering is a highly innovative sector in Germany. As reported by the German Mechanical Engineering Industry Association (VDMA), it is one of the most research-intensive industrial sectors, alongside automotive, electrical engineering and the pharmaceuticals/chemicals industry.German inventors score highest for the most mechanical engineering patents registered at the European Patents Office. In some areas they are even world champions when it comes to patents. This means that mechanical engineering careers will continue to be among the most exciting and future-oriented on the jobs market.
