The practical study semester serves as an introduction into the work of a multimedia designer/developer. By helping to resolve design and technical issues in a suitable digital media design/production company, under the guidance of an experienced specialist, the student should build on the knowledge learned lectures by applying it to specific tasks – and receive an insight into life working in digital media.
Training location
The student will start searching for a training company early on, in the fourth semester.
The student is responsible for finding a company and agreeing a training contract.
The department will support you with a list of companies, which is available from the department office or on the Intranet.
Notification
Before the start of the semester (by 01.03. for the summer semester or 01.09. for the winter semester) a copy of the practical semester contract must be submitted to Prof. Hofmann (post pigeon holes in the Prittwitzstrasse)!
Doing the placement
Within the period set aside for the practical semester, the student must be present at the training company for 100 days.
The following sectors are appropriate for work placements in digital media design / development:
- Graphics and design offices
- Advertising and Internet agencies
- IT departments in large companies in industries of all kinds
- Digital photographic studios
- 3D animation studios
- Audio/video, film and game production studios
During the training, the student should test their abilities with tasks they work on independently, under the supervision of a qualified specialist.
The student should also have the opportunity to get an insight into subject-related areas, as well as the work functions preceding and succeeding the part of the production process in which the internship is being performed.
Monotonous, or intellectually less demanding tasks which are often carried out by students trainees will certainly not be recognised as training content for the practical semester.
Support from the Ulm University of Applied Sciences
During the practical semester, the student will be supported by a lecturer.
One month into the practical semester, the students should e-mail a short report (2-3 A4 pages) to Prof. Thomas Hofmann, or directly to their supporting tutor.
The report must include the contact details (e.g. e-mail address, telephone number etc.) of the employer, as well as the name of the local supervisor.
Internship certificate
At the end of the training period, the company issues an internship certificate.
This certificate will confirm the period of training and any time missed, as well as the departments experienced or the content of the training. This does not mean it can be used as an employment reference! Please use the preprepared form for this.
The certificate (preferably along with the work report) should be submitted to Prof. Hofmann.
Work report
The content of the practical semester must be documented in a work report.
Depending on the work, this report can be limited to the description of the solution to a single problem or of multiple problems. It should comprise at least 20 pages, and, as well as the text component, use diagrams, graphics and images to illustrate the content described. The structure, layout, spelling and external appearance of the report must comply with the requirements for students in the sixth semester of Digital Media.
At the end of the training period, the student must submit the report to the company so it can be read and signed.
Submission date
The signed work report and the internship certificate must be submitted to Prof. Hofmann or to the supporting tutor via the post pigeon hole in Böfingen or in the Prittwitzstrasse, at least one week before the start of lectures in the sixth semester.
If you have any questions, please contact Prof. Hofmann via e-mail.
Presentation
On the Monday of the first week of the new semester, each student will give a presentation (duration 15 min) to their supporting lecturer about their activities in the practical semester, presenting selected results from their work.
The time and location will be displayed on the noticeboard, as well as on the department homepage.
Recognition
The supporting lecturer decides whether the practical semester will be recognised or not.
Recognition is a prerequisite for admission to the sixth semester.
